DeVotchKa – How It Ends

By Nicole Stanish 2 min read

DeVotchKa may be a Russian word but this 4-piece group from Denver, Colorado blends folk, mariachi, gypsy, indie rock and other various influences to create the feeling of being whisked away with some drunken Romanian circus troupe that you never want to leave. They’ve toured with Regina Spektor, The Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello, even Mike Doughty as well as burlesque dancer, Dita Von Teese. “How It Ends” is what you listen to while you’re drinking red wine in a dark and smoky room, while you’re creating beautiful pieces of art, strolling through Prague or Paris, or getting your heart broken. It beautifully covers the spectrum of emotions. Nick Urata croons and sways with bottle in hand lamenting lost love in the album’s first track “You Love Me.” “Dearly Departed” is the song you want to be serenaded to you. And “Charlotte Mittnacht” takes you to the circus. Violin, accordion, and tuba blend for exotic richness and for their genre they sound like no other.

By the end of this album you feel like you’ve read the journal of someone’s entire lifetime.
