SPRINGHILL TWP. – An unidentified man was killed Tuesday when the vehicle he was driving crashed about a quarter mile south of Winstead on Route 166.

State police Trooper Dale Brown said the man was from the Point Marion area, but said he could not release the man’s identity until family was notified.

Brown said the crash is believed to have occurred sometime Tuesday afternoon.

According to Brown, a passerby spotted the overturned car in a ravine around 6 p.m. and called 911.

Emergency personnel on scene said the man is believed to have lost control of the vehicle while rounding a curve on Route 166, also know as New Geneva Road.

The vehicle traveled off the roadway, missing the guide rails by about two feet, before rolling several times and coming to a stop about 100 yards from the road.

The man was ejected from the vehicle and found about 40 feet from the overturned car, between the car and the road.

Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department Chief Gary Ganoe said accidents occur frequently on that section of Route 166.

Ganoe said the overturned vehicle was cold and not running when crews arrived on scene.

“It was ice cold,” he said.

Because the overturned car was hard to see from the roadway, Brown said the accident probably occurred a few hours before it was reported.

“A passerby just happened to notice it and called 911,” he said.

In addition to police and the Point Marion VFD, Point Marion EMS and the Fayette County Coroner’s office also responded to the scene.

No further information was available as of deadline Tuesday.
