Walter A. ‘Luddy’ Kasunic
Walter A. ‘Luddy’ Kasunic, 93, of Monarch passed away peacefully on Monday, February 26, 2007, in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born November 16, 1913, in Monarch, a son of the late Anthony and Mary Shutey Kasunic.
He was a member of Saint Vincent DePaul Roman Catholic Church in Leisenring.
Walter was employed as a coal miner for over 40 years. First as a member of the United Mine Workers of America then later finishing his career as an assistant mine foreman at United States Steel’s Maple Creek Mine. Walter was a life member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, the Dunbar Sportsman’s Club and the National Rifle Association. As a young man he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing.
Walter is survived by two sons: Pa. State Senator Richard A. Kasunic Sr., of Monarch, and his fianc?e, Janet Michael, and Randall Kasunic and his wife, Sharon of Monarch; two daughters: Barbara Kasunic of Monarch and Mary Joyce Shmigalsky and husband, Ronald of Dunbar; grandchildren: Todd Shmigalsky and wife, Christy of Bridgeport, W.Va., Richard Kasunic Jr. and wife, Laura of Monarch, Trudie Harvey and husband, George of Connellsville, Nicole Kasunic of Monarch and Joseph Kasunic of Monarch; a great-grandchild, Caden Shmigalsky of Bridgeport, W.Va.; a brother, Frank Kasunic and wife, Margaret of North Huntington; a sister, Elvira Vickovic of Dravosburg; including several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Walter was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Basinsky Kasunic, three brothers, Joseph, John and George Kasunic, three sisters, Olga Zavatsky, Mary Spear and Donna Bakirin.
Family and friends will be received in the VITO C. MARTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, 123 South First Street, West Side, Connellsville, on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Blessing Service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m., in the Vito C. Martucci Funeral Home, 123 South First Street, West Side, Connellsville, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., in the Saint Vincent DePaul Roman Catholic Church in Leisenring, with Monsignor Edward McCullough as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
A Parish Wake Service will be held on Thursday at 4 p.m., in the Funeral Home.
