Uniontown firefighters, paramedics earn praise

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

Uniontown Police Chief Ronald Kozak commended the city’s firefighters and paramedics on Wednesday for assisting police on an early December morning when officers were scrambling to respond to a fatal accident and two fights that occurred within minutes of each other. “A lot of things happened that night,” Kozak said at the Uniontown City Council meeting.

He said officers were at the scene of a vehicle accident in which a 2-year-old child died on Dec. 9 when they received a call about a large fight at a bar.

Some of the officers responded, but encountered another fight while en route to the bar fight, he said.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Morgantown Street.

State police were called to assist, but city firefighters and paramedics already were there and their help in protecting the accident scene enabled police to carryout a thorough investigation, Kozak said.

They also helped police at the scene of one of the fights, he said.

“Without Myron (Nypaver), we’d have had a problem,” Kozak said. “One of Myron’s guys even held a guy so we could cuff him.”

“It’s all about teamwork,” said Nypaver, fire chief, adding that the departments often assist each other.

Kozak said the police department received 708 calls in December.

After the council meeting, Councilman Joseph Giachetti said the master plan for the city’s parks will be presented at a special meeting this month. The meeting has not yet been scheduled.

The presentation will include cost estimates for the improvements to the parks, Giachetti said.

Council’s next meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Feb. 7.
