Driver suffers severe injuries

The driver of a car that sheared two utility poles and a fire hydrant before flipping onto its roof suffered severe injuries in the crash on New Salem Road in South Union Township around 5 a.m. Thursday. According to state police, Lawrence Ewing Jr. of Republic suffered major injuries in the one-car crash that occurred near the intersection with Florene Road. Ewing was flown by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. An update on his condition was not available as of press time. Fayette County 911 said volunteer firefighters from New Salem and South Union Township – along with emergency personnel from Fayette EMS, Uniontown Fireman’s Ambulance, American EMS and the state police – responded to the crash.
