Director hired Eric Chapman has joined the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s Freshwater Conservation Program as director of aquatic science.
Chapman will be working on several of the conservancy’s freshwater conservation initiatives, with a significant focus on advancing the conservancy’s work on the Allegheny and Ohio rivers, the Little Mahoning Creek Protection and Restoration Project, and numerous other major projects.
Chapman has a bachelor of science degree in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in environmental science from Montclair State University in New Jersey. He has several years of aquatic science experience, which includes time as a research scientist at CUNY, Queens College, N.Y., and Montclair State University. He also served as a consultant for The Gaia Institute, Bronx, N.Y., and MATRIX New World Engineering Inc., East Hanover, N.J., where he investigated invertebrate range delineations at West Point Military Academy.
Murtha sets schedule
U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Johnstown) has announced his outreach schedule for the month.
The staff member based in the congressman’s Uniontown office, 20 N. Gallatin Ave., will be out of the office during the times listed below to do outreach at other locations in the three counties:Connellsville – City Hall, 110 N. Arch St., 1 to 4 p.m. Monday.
Brownsville – Borough building, Second and High streets, 11 to 2 p.m. Thursday
Greene County
Waynesburg – Room 303, Greene County Office Building, 93 E. High St., from 9:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 30, and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday
Carmichaels – Borough building, 200 S. Market St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday
Washington County
Regularly scheduled outreach hours at Murtha’s Washington office, 56 W. Maiden St. (across the street from City Hall), are Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Meeting announced
Nonprofit organizations are increasingly recognizing the important role advocacy and government relations plays in their efforts to raise money and fulfill their missions.
At the January meeting of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Doug Saltzman, vice president of business development with L. Robert Kimball & Associates, will discuss how organizations can develop and maintain relationships with government to enhance funding opportunities and impact legislation. Saltzman has worked for senators, Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania and Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. He frequently shares his knowledge by speaking to groups on legislative and political topics.
