Contractor to demolish bleachers

By The 1 min read

CALIFORNIA – The bleachers at Booster Field will be coming down. For the past several years, the California Area School Board has debated what to do about the bleachers, which have open backs and were deemed unsafe by the district’s insurance carrier. The district has several times sought plans to retrofit the bleachers only to be told that modifying the bleachers to prevent someone from falling under them could make them structurally unsound.

In a continued meeting Monday the board awarded a bid to Tuday Construction and Excavation to demolish the bleachers. Tuday submitted a bid of $4,940.23, slightly higher than the lowest bidder who failed to do the required walk-through at the site with the district’s maintenance director.

The board also voted to opt out of the Act 1 accelerated budget adoption process, which would have required passage of a preliminary budget by Jan. 25. The board instead agreed that it would not increase property taxes by more than the inflationary index set by Act 1.

In other matters, the board voted to hire Cindy Dunlevy as the assistant girls’ high school basketball coach.
