A Connellsville man was sentenced to 11/2 to three years in prison for homicide by vehicle for running over his 2-year-old niece while she was playing in the driveway of her home in August. Additionally, Greg A. Gibbs Sr., 28, was sentenced to 90 days on each four summary offenses.

“It’s the most I could offer him under the statute,” Vernon said, noting that she did discuss the plea deal with the victim’s family.

Megan Renee Shipley was playing in her mother’s driveway at 331 N. Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, on Aug. 2 when Gibbs sped into the driveway and hit the toddler. Shipley’s parents saw the accident, and family members yelled for him to stop, but he did not slow down.

She had skull fractures from the impact and died later that evening at Highlands Hospital in Connellsville.

Last week, Gibbs pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, careless driving, driving at an unsafe speed and operating a vehicle without required financial responsibility.
