Fred D. Hagerty, MD
Fred D. Hagerty, MD, 79, of York, Pa., entered heaven on January 26, 2007, to enjoy eternal life won for him through the death and resurrection of his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He died at home, surrounded by his loving family and compassionate caregivers. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 East Market Street, York, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. John E. Morgan, assisted by the Rev. Larry McConnell. A memorial luncheon will immediately follow in the
Christine Thomas Hall at the Church.
A private burial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Fred was born February 18, 1927, in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; son of the late Grover R. and Mabel M. [Walters] Hagerty.
He graduated as Class President of Uniontown High School in 1945 and joined the United States Army during WWII. Fred then graduated from Penn State in 1950 with a Bachelor of
Science in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and went on to then University of PA and graduated with honors in 1954, earning his VMD. He then chose to leave Veterinary Medicine and entered NY Medical College, where he graduated with honors in 1958 earning his MD. He interned at York Hospital from 1958-1959. Dr. Hagerty then took over Lewis Herrold’s medical practice in Dover for one year and had operated with Dr. Ray Kehm, general surgeon, and Dr. Jack Angelo, plastic surgeon.
He ran his own family practice from 1961 through 1964 and then initiated his Ophthalmology residency at the University of MD from 1964 through 1967, and graduated in 1967. Dr. Hagerty practiced Ophthalmology from 1967 through 1991 in his office on the Queen St. Hill. He loved his practice and particularly his patients and retired in 1991 due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Ann C. [Cope] Hagerty with whom he was married for 34 years; and his five children; Deborah H. Ibsen of San Francisco, California, Thomas D. Hagerty and his wife Patricia, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, William M. Eyster III and his wife Janene, of York, Katherine C. Adams and her husband Joseph of York, and Linda L. Hagerty and her husband George Niespolo of San Francisco; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and Matt Hagerty of Chevy Chase, George and Dominic Niespolo of San Francisco, Lauren and Eric Eyster and Madison and Ryan Adams all of York; and his dear sister, Dorothy J. Hagerty of Uniontown. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert S. Hagerty and sister, Catherine H.Allen.
Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and we look forward to the time when we will reunite with him in the presence of God and our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
