Masontown U.M. Church The congregation of Masontown United Methodist Church worships at 10 a.m. on Sunday, located on the corner of Main and Cross streets. Today, the Rev. Bob Lewis will preach “Learning to Be Good Samaritans,” based on Luke 10:25-37. The church will hold its annual “Worship in the Park” on July 29. A picnic with games and a penny auction will follow.

Vacation Bible School will be held Sunday through Friday, August 5 through 10 for grades preschool to fifth. The theme “Waterworks Park” promises lots of fun games, crafts, songs and lessons. VBS will be held at the Masontown-German Park from 6:15 until 9 p.m.

The youth planned several activities for the summer including canoe and white water raft trips as well as community youth group activities. For more information about the church and its ministries, contact Rev. Lewis, at 724-583-9207.

Author to speak

Dr. Barbara Wilhelm, a full-time practicing physician in Fayette County and recently published author will appear at the German-Masontown Library on Tuesday at 2 p.m. to discuss her murder-mystery-romance novel, “Murder Makes the Rounds.” The story takes place in a small town hospital. Wilhelm uses her medical expertise to provide accurate medical facts, but the story is totally fictional. Her book will be available to purchase at the library on the day of her presentation. Dr. Wilhelm writes under the name, Mela Barrows Bennett. She is currently working on a sequel to this story. This Friends of the Library sponsored event is free to the public and all are invited to attend. For more information contact Mary Anne Hritz at 724-583-9204.

Friends of the Library

The next Friends of the Library meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the library. Members are asked to bring a dozen cookies to be served at the author’s presentation, which will follow the business meeting.

Presbyterian Church

The First Presbyterian Church, 102 Church Ave., Masontown, invites the public to breakfast on Sunday morning at 9:30, followed by worship at 11. Our worship leader this week is Ross Ackinclose, CLP. The sermon title is “Can I pass on by?” with scripture text from Psalm 101: 1-4, and Luke 10: 25-37.

Minute for Mission today is by Charlotte Bonvenuto. Ushers are Frank Martin, Arnold Koon, David Martin, and Peter Sisko. Greeter for the month of July is Kay Nevlud.

Peace Corps

Daron Christopher left on June 25 to begin serving in the Peace Corps in Cape Verde, Africa. He will be working as a “Community Resource Mobilizer” during his 27 months there. Cape Verde is a group of islands located off the West Coast of Africa near Senegal.

Daron graduated in April from the University of Pittsburgh where he was also part of the Semester at Sea “around the world cruise” in the spring of 2005. Daron completed his junior year at Imperial College in London, England. He is a 2003 graduate of Albert Gallatin High School.

He is the son of Dave and Sharon Christopher of McClellandtown.

Church yard sale

The Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Smithfield, will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 21 in the church parking lot. The church is located at 30 Church St., Smithfield. Various household items, toys, antiques, furniture and more will be available for purchase. Food items will also be offered. The public is invited to attend.

Senior center news

Members of the Masontown Senior Center held a bake sale and flea market to begin the month of June. Thanks are extended to all who contributed and supported the sale. Shirley Rhodes, Jenny Ebner, Agnes Bogozi and Mary Corob contributed to Flag Day with readings on the 14th.

The group celebrated Fathers’ Day with readings by Mary Corob, Clara Delaney, Shirley Rhodes, Tillie DelGado and Virginia McCann and music by Dave Townsend. John Mrazeck was recognized as the oldest father, Dave Townsend as the youngest father, and Ed Yocabet as having the most children.

Several members attended the sports award banquet on June 21. Members receiving awards included Bucky Shaffer, Dennis Fabbri, George Crosby, Nila Rowe, George Rowe, Mary Steinman, Dave Fedor and Colleen Moore.

Birthday celebrants for June included Kristin Dunham and John Kormanik.

Cards, bingo, programs, games and exercise are planned each month. New members are always invited to attend.
