College to present ‘The Sound of Music’
As part of “Celebrating the Arts 2007,” Waynesburg College will hold three theatrical performances of Roger and Hammerstein’s classic “The Sound of Music” on July 19, 20 and 21.
Under the direction of Edward L. Powers, and with the vocal direction of Michael Bruno, performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night. The performances are open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the door. “It’s a wonderful story with beautiful music, and we’re excited to bring it to our stage,” said Edward L. Powers, the college’s director of drama.
“The Sound of Music” tells the story of Maria, a high-spirited postulant, who is dispatched to the home of a strict and stern sea captain. Before too long, Maria transforms the captain’s seven children into a fun-loving and song-filled group, thus melting the hard heart of the captain. This change also brings about a romance between the captain and Maria. But as the family learns to love a new mother, they must also learn to deal with the rise of the Nazi party in their beloved corner of Austria.
Well-known songs from this show include “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
