He was 56 years old.
Jeff was born in Washington, Pa., on September 3, 1951, to James Sargent and Virginia (Ruffalo) Sargent.
After graduation from Imacculate Conception High School in 1969, Jeff joined the Army Reserves stationed out of Fort Dix, N.J., and served during the Vietnam War.
He received the Bronze Star with an honorable discharge on May 7, 1972. Upon his return, he resided in Uniontown, Pa., and attended college at California University and Penn State University.
Jeff was an avid golfer with ambitions of joining the pro circuit before a car accident left him paralyzed. He was also a passionate sports fan, especially dedicated to the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Team.
On a beautiful day, you could find Jeff wheeling his chair through South Park in Pittsburgh, handsome and well dressed in his own charming way, eager to chat with locals about politics, good food and the latest sporting events.
After living in Seattle, Wash., and Austin, Texas, for many years he returned to Pittsburgh in the spring of 2006, the city he felt most at home. This past year, he spent his time reacquainting with old friends and making new ones while never missing a Penquins hockey match.
Jeff is survived by his mother, Virginia Sargent, a resident of Austin, Texas; his sisters: Sandra Rothermund of Washington, Pa., Leslie Sargent and husband, Jeff Williford of Edmond, Ok., Kelly Thompson and husband, Troy of Seattle, Wash., Lennie Grimes and husband, Glenn of Houston, Texas, Dana Sullivan and husband, Scott of Austin, Texas, Tracy Dramberger and husband, Eric of Austin, Texas; a brother, Michael Sargent of Seattle, Washington. Jeff will also be remembered by several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins along with family friends, Trip and Jenny Radcliffe and sons.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, James Sargent, sister, Jamie Verchek and nephew, Thomas Rothermund.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Allegheny General Hospital and West Penn Hospital ICU units for your kindness and compassion during Jeff’s final days.
Jeff’s wishes to be cremated were fulfilled and a Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 200773, Austin, Texas, 78720-0773, in care of The Sargent Family.
