Rockwell Jones – Becoming
Supporting local, up-and-coming bands is a responsibility all music lovers should demonstrate vigorously. I was recently given a copy of one such band from the Arlington, Virginia area. Becoming features 5 tunes from Rockwell Jones. This promising quartet blends a variety of influences and styles to produce their own unique sound on their debut EP. “My Becoming” gets the party started early with a Pearl Jam-like fury of guitars and vocals that show this band came to play. “Sweet Release” follows with a funky and light groove that is perfect for any summer night function. The infectious chorus and musical arrangement would certainly make Dave Matthews smile. “Accept Goodbye” features another strong vocal performance with a musical kick that should make it a great live performance number. One would think that ZZ Top is in the house with the laid back and smooth arrangement (before delivering a heavy punch) of “Ted’s Head.” “Crystal Beaches” closes out the set with a smooth and mellow flow, before it busts out the rock & roll whooping stick.
It seems Rockwell Jones is full of surprises as they try to stay away from being too predictable. Here’s one thing that is predictable, these guys are “becoming” a force to be heard. So check out a live show when you can. Visit the website (www.myspace.com/rockwelljones) and find out what’s going on with the band. Finally, tell your friends. That’s how I got turned on. Easy, isn’t it?
