Committee chooses July 28 for Hopwood Homecoming
The Hopwood Village Project committee responsible for organizing the second annual Hopwood Homecoming celebration announced Thursday the all-day event will be held July 28. Goldie Stromick, co-chair of the committee, said residents from both North Union and South Union townships are invited to attend, as are all out-of-town family members, former residents and friends.
“We’re hoping for a big crowd this year,” she said, adding that it’s a family-friendly event. “We’ll have activities going on all day.”
Stromick said the celebration will be held at the Hutchinson Ball Park pavilions and said gifts will be given out.
“We’ll have prizes for the oldest person, the youngest person and the biggest family attending,” she said.
South Union Township Supervisor Rick Vernon, who is also co-chair of the committee, said a medical helicopter will arrive between noon and 1 p.m. Vernon said fire trucks will also be at the park for the public to inspect.
“It’s going to be a good time,” he said.
The next Hopwood Homecoming Committee meeting will be held at 6 p.m. July 10 at the South Union Township administration building. For more information, call Stromick at 724-438-7503 or Vernon at 724-438-5480.
In unrelated business, committee members learned the streetscape project is progressing according to schedule.
The streetscape project, being worked on by Maccabee Industrial Inc. of Belle Vernon and McMillen Engineering of Uniontown, includes the demolition and removal of existing sidewalks and pathways in Hopwood to be replaced with more than 3,000 square feet of stamped concrete sidewalks of varying widths.
Bob DeBord of Maccabee said construction crews will soon be laying sidewalks on the South Union side of Hopwood, having laid most of the sidewalks on the North Union side.
The $1 million project is being paid for with a federal grant from the office of U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Holidaysburg. The state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is administering the grant.
DeBord said property owners who have questions or concerns about work being done near their property need to make those concerns known before crews arrive and begin working.
“We want to make the property owners happy, but we need to know early on,” he said.
The next Hopwood Village Project meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 26 in the South Union Township administration building.
