Wolfmother – Wolfmother

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

Just when you thought stadium rock was extinct, along comes a band to light the torch…or should I say carry the lighter? Get your black light out of the attic because ’70s hard rock rules again with the arrival of this power trio from Australia. On their self-titled debut, Wolfmother delivers sweeping power chords (to the delight of air guitarists everywhere) as Andrew Stockdale’s vocals echo over theatrical lyrics that hug the deep bass and organ riffs. Stockdale’s vocals on “Dimension” set the tone as the hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise…in a good way, of course. Chris Ross provides the bass and organ with playing that would fit comfortably in any Deep Purple tune. As a matter of fact, I kept waiting for the band to break into a cover of “Highway Star” during several songs. Myles Heskett’s steady drumming provides the thread that keeps everything from coming apart. And there is certainly a lot to keep together.

With song titles reminiscent of a Uriah Heep album, the band starts strong and never stops with tunes like “White Unicorn” and “Colossal” really standing out.

In 1973, ELP invited us back to the show that never ends. In 2006, Wolfmother keeps the show rolling. Stadium rock lives again. Lift your lighter in appreciation!
