Uniontown mayor faces challengers
Democratic Uniontown Mayor James R. Sileo is facing challengers from both parties in his bid for a fourth consecutive term at the city’s helm. And three Democratic candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for two open seats on city council in this year’s elections.
Tuesday was the deadline for candidates entering the May 15 primary to file their nominating petitions with the Fayette County elections office.
Sileo, who served two terms on council before he was elected mayor, is facing a challenge from Democratic candidate Ed Fike for the party’s nomination in the primary.
The winner will square off against Republican candidate Russell R. Rhodes, who is running unopposed for the Grand Old Party nomination, in the general election in November for a four-year term as mayor.
Democratic City Councilmen Bob Cerjanec and Blair R. Jones Sr. and Democratic challenger Marlin Sprouts Jr. are seeking the party nominations for two seats, which also have four-year terms.
Cerjanec and Jones are seeking their third consecutive terms on council.
The city treasurer’s race attracted candidates from both parties.
Joseph N. Giachetti, who is serving his second on city council and is a former Uniontown Area School Board member, and deputy treasurer Charlanne C. Makarun are seeking the Democratic Party nomination.
Republican candidate Robert E. Jones Jr., a former councilman, mayor and county commissioner, is seeking the Republican nomination.
Incumbent Democratic Controller John S. Cupp, who is an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant, is running unopposed for his second four-year term in office.
