Nightcrawler picks up where Musicforthemorningafter left off. Not that Yorn’s second release, Day I Forgot was that forgettable. Nightcrawler contains all the early potential that Yorn teased us with on his debut release through strong lyrics, vocal style variations, distorted guitar chords and song hooks that become infectious the more they wander through your head. The album opens with the haunting and dark “Vampyre.” Just when we think that we are in for an ominous ride, Yorn follows with “For Us” featuring Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) on drums. What follows is a barrage of well-crafted songs that draw you in one after another. “The Man” is simply unforgettable as Natalie Maine (Dixie Chicks) lends a hand. Her vocals embrace Yorn’s lead like two lost souls reuniting.
Other standouts include “Undercover,” “Maybe I’m Right,” and “Alive.” Yorn’s laid-back instrumental sound and passionate lyrical vignettes create images that stay with the listener long after the music ends. You can vividly feel the frustration and defiance in Yorn’s voice as he covers Warren Zevon’s “Splendid Isolation.”
Yorn proves that he’s good in the morning, but the night time is the right time for this Jersey-born singer/songwriter.
