Sophisticated, beautiful, melancholic, industrial…and all with an 18-piece orchestra. Jon Crosby is the one responsible for the theatrical mixing of synth, Gregorian chants, and a slight touch of the Middle East. This was the debut album from VAST and while it received favorable reviews, I’m surprised to find that not many people have heard of this band. Visual Audio Sensory Theater holds incredibly articulate lyrics posing questions regarding death, love, relationships and religion. So many tracks on this album have beautifully haunting lyrics that are surprisingly never overpowered by the driving, yet ambient, new progressive sound. Occasionally the lyrics contradict each other, leaving you to ask yourself if Crosby loves or hates the subjects of his songs. It is this brutal honesty that makes VAST’s music respectable and a staple of my music collection.
