Water main break cuts service a dozen
More than a dozen area residents, several area businesses and a school were without water service Monday after a water main broke Monday morning on North Mount Vernon Avenue in Uniontown. Uniontown police Lt. Michael Metros said the line erupted between 6:30 and 7 a.m. and was pumping water about 3 feet into the air, quickly flooding the road.
“The road was already buckled up by the time we got there,” Metros said.
Metros said emergency personnel closed Mount Vernon Avenue from Ben Lomond Street to Main Street as crews from Pennsylvania American Water Co. worked to repair the fractured line.
School was canceled at Ben Franklin School because of the suspended water service.
It was not immediately clear what caused the break.
The road still was closed Monday afternoon as work on the ruptured line continued.
Pennsylvania American Water Co. spokesman Philip Cynar said Monday afternoon that some area residents experienced an initial drop in water pressure following the break but that once crews stemmed the flow, water service returned to normal for most residents.
Metros said police received a report of flooding from the break at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 and said that one car had to be pulled from the flooded road following the break, but noted that no major flooding was reported.
Officials were planning on having the line repaired and water service restored sometime Monday.
