March 14, 2007 Man pleads guilty
An Allegheny County man already in state prison for sex-related offenses, pleaded guilty last week to raping two girls at a Fayette County home in 2003.
Fayette County Judge Ralph C. Warman sentenced Duane Scott Nelson III, 21, of Forward Township to 4 to 8 years in prison for the rapes but stipulated that Nelson will not serve additional time in prison unless he violates the terms of an earlier sentence.
Nelson pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault in the incident that involved two girls under the age of 10 that Nelson was watching at a Washington Township home in May 2003.
Nelson is currently serving 5 to 20 years in state prison for an unrelated case in which he was convicted of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault.
PennDOT to display plans
The state Department of Transportation will display is plans for the replacement of the Route 381 bridge over Mill Run in Springfield Township from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the municipal building/fire station on Route 381 in Mill Run. PennDOT said the project will begin this summer.
Aide to visit
The legislative aide from the office of state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, will be at the Redstone Township Municipal Building, 225 Twin Hills Road, Grindstone, from 9 a.m. until noon Friday to meet with constituents.
Matters dealing with state government may be referred to the office.

Meeting canceled
The Uniontown Redevelopment Authority canceled its meeting Tuesday due to a lack of a quorum of board members. The meeting has been rescheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the authority’s office in the Fayette Chamber of Commerce building on West Main Street.

The Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority cancelled its meeting Tuesday due to a lack of a quorum of board members. The meeting has been rescheduled to 4 p.m. April 10 at City Hall.
Discount offered
The Luzerne Township Sewage Authority is offering a $50 discount on early payment of tap-in fees. If a customer pays by March 31, the tap-in fee will be $850 per equivalent dwelling unit. After April 1, the fee will be $900 per dwelling unit, the authority said.
The authority’s office will be closed April 6 in observance of Good Friday.To recognize the severity of alcohol abuse, April is designated “Alcohol Awareness Month” across the nation and April 5 also marks the annual observance of National Alcohol Screening Day.
Fayette County Drug and Alcohol Commission Inc. will host the annual event locally at the Uniontown Wal-Mart pharmacy from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 5. There is no urine or blood testing involved in the screening. Free, anonymous screenings will help determine if you or a loved one may have an alcohol problem.
National Alcohol Screening Day is designed to provide outreach, screening and education about alcohol’s effects on health for the general public. All across the United States at select locations, people can be anonymously screened to see if their drinking habits may be unsafe. Even relatively low levels of alcohol consumption may increase risk for motor vehicle crashes, medication interactions, fetal effects, strokes caused by bleeding and certain cancers.
Any participant who visits our screening sites will have the opportunity to review educational materials, such as a questionnaire that screens for unsafe drinking and dependence. Participants also can meet one-on-one with a health professional to discuss any concerns. Also, those who participate in the screening can register to win prizes.
