Redstone outlines uses for grant
REDSTONE TWP. – The Redstone Township supervisors will be using the township’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for 2005-2007 for a variety of community projects, including the extension of water lines and fighting blight. The supervisors voted to use the 2007 CDBG allocation for the Stone Church Road water line extension project, the Tower Hill 1 water line replacement project, improvements to Republic Library and support for housing rehabilitation activities.
The supervisors modified their 2005 and 2006 grant spending plans. The supervisors voted to use $60,000 from the 2005 CDBG grant for the Bunker Hill water line extension. They will use $10,000 of the 2007 allocation for a township-wide demolition project to reduce blight, $25,000 toward a fire truck for the Republic Volunteer Fire Department and $60,000 for the Thompson 1 water line replacement project.
Ralph Rice, chairman of the supervisors, said there are at least three or four vacant houses that will be torn down with the grant money once all the proper legal clearances are received. “There will be liens put on the properties,” Rice said.
The supervisors also passed a resolution giving 30 days’ notice to the Fayette County building inspector that the township no will longer use the county service for enforcement of the Uniform Construction Code. The township will be utilizing the services of K2 Engineering of Uniontown for construction inspections in the future.
A mercantile license was issued to Tom Clark Jr. and John Sebeck to operate the Route 40 Classic Diner at 6229 National Pike East. Rice said all state, county and federal permits were in order.
In other matters, one Republic resident said he noticed an increase in the number of prostitutes on the streets as well as ongoing drug activity. Rice said the township is considering adding another officer to the part-time police force. The officers worked a total of 135.5 hours in February and patrolled 802 miles. They issued 13 traffic citations, made two drug arrests and served one warrant. They received 27 calls for service, including six regarding harassing calls, two for thefts, two for burglaries and two for domestic disputes.
The Steve Courson Humane Society received 29 calls from Redstone residents in February. Four dogs and two cats were picked up.
