Volunteers sought for Hanna’s Town
Hanna’s Town, one of Westmoreland County’s most significant historical sites, attracts numerous schoolchildren, tourists and history buffs interested in southwestern Pennsylvania’s early American history. The Westmoreland County Historical Society is recruiting volunteers to present tours and assist in the gift shop at the site for this summer. Hanna’s Town, founded in 1773, served as the first county seat and the first English court west of the Allegheny Mountains. The settlement was destroyed by a British and American Indian war party on July 13, 1782, in one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War. The historical society provides interpretive educational programs from May though October related to life on the colonial frontier of western Pennsylvania. Hanna’s Town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering at the site this summer should call education coordinator Joanna Moyar at 724-836-1800 extension 12 for information about the schedule, and to register for the training sessions, which begin Saturday, April 14.
