Former Abu Ghraib prison commander to speak
CALIFORNIA – Janis Karpinski, a former U.S. Army brigadier general who commanded Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, will be the keynote speaker for California University of Pennsylvania’s Second Annual Audrey-Beth Fitch Women’s Studies Conference on Thursday. Karpinski will present the keynote address at 7 p.m. in the Morgan Hall Auditorium. She will allow time for a question-and-answer period following her remarks. There will be a book signing of “One Woman’s Army: The Commanding General of Abu Ghraib Tells Her Story” immediately following the question-and-answer session.
Now a self-employed corporate consultant for executive training programs, Karpinski also will participate in a roundtable discussion at 9:30 a.m. that will focus on managing leadership challenges in the workplace. Her topic will be “Abu Ghraib: Women in the Military and Its Impact on Working Women.” Joining her on the panel will be Glenna Miller, a former Army major who will speak on “Holistic Leadership: Women as True Leaders in the Next Age, 2006-2026.” The moderator is Dr. Michael Hummel, assistant professor in the justice, law and society department, will be the moderator.
The conference is named in honor of Dr. Audrey-Beth Fitch, who directed the women’s studies program and taught in the department of history and political science before her untimely death in 2005. Karpinski’s presentation is free and open to the public.
