Red Cross offers courses The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter will hold the following health and safety courses at 108 Morgantown St., Uniontown in May and June:

– 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 19 and June 19, First Aid. This course teaches the skills needed to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personal arrive. This is a three-year certification that meets OSHA First Aid guidelines.

– 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 12 and June 16, Standard First Aid with CPR/AED – Adult. This course teaches Standard First Aid, Adult CPR and AED. This provides a one-year certification for Adult CPR and AED and a three-year certification in Standard First Aid.

– 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23, CPR/AED – Adult and Child Plus Infant CPR. This course prepares individuals to act in emergencies and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults, infants and children. It provides a one-year certification in Adult and Child CPR and AED and Infant CPR.

– 5:30 to 10 p.m. today and June 5, CPR/AED – Adult. This course prepares individuals to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults. It provides one-year certification in Adult CPR and AED.

– 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 2, Babysitter’s Training. This course teachers leadership, caregiving and safety skills, problem-solving and management and tips on finding babysitting jobs to individuals age 11 and above.

The course also teaches how to respond to emergencies and illnesses with first aid and rescue breathing.

There is a cost for the courses. Registrations are taken over the phone from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 724-438-2567 or via fax at 724-438-2589.

Walk slated

Stand Tall and Walk for Strong Bones, a three-mile walk and health fair to benefit the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Mount St. Macrina on Route 40 in Uniontown.

The event will benefit the local Fayette County community by offering free bone density screenings and holding awareness and educational program on osteoporosis throughout the year.

Walkers are encouraged to help fight the disease by securing pledges. They will learn how they can prevent this bone-thinning disease while they are walking to support osteoporosis research and education efforts.

Area businesses also recognize the impact osteoporosis has in the community and are supporting Stand Tall and Walk for Strong Bones.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

– 8 a.m. to noon, Continental breakfast, walk and health fair, including free bone density screenings.

– 8 to 9 p.m., Registration with open registration welcome.

– 9 to 9:15 a.m., Opening ceremony.

– 9:15 p.m., Walk begins.
