Police: Jammed gun misfired, injuring two

By Patty Yauger 1 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – A jammed handgun was the apparent cause of a shooting Saturday afternoon that sent two Connellsville men to the hospital. Robert Beatty, 34, of 825 Morrell Ave., and Timothy Eutsey, 21, of 1124 Race St., were taken to the hospital following the 2:30 p.m. incident after the .45-caliber gun discharged and struck Beatty in the hand and Eutsey in both of his legs.

Connellsville police Chief Stephen Cooper said Monday that Beatty was sitting on the bed in an apartment located at 1100 S. Pittsburgh St. attempting to dislodge a bullet that had become jammed in the weapon, when the incident took place.

The gun fired, striking Beatty’s hand and then traveled through the back of Eutsey’s legs as he stood nearby.

“I do not believe that there was any intent to intentionally fire the gun,” said Cooper, adding that Beatty, the owner of the weapon, does have a valid gun permit.

Beatty was taken to Highlands Hospital and Eutsey was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. There was no information available from the hospitals as to the condition of the two men.

Cooper said that the investigation is continuing.
