Brownsville trying to tackle quad problem

By Christine Haines 2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – Five out of six calls to the Brownsville police Wednesday and Thursday were complaints involving all-terrain vehicles. “We have been having a large problem with quads and we are going to strictly enforce all laws applying to quads,” said Brownsville Officer Josh Mrosko.

Three calls complaining about quads on the streets came within about an hour of one another Wednesday night. A woman in South Hills Terrace reported multiple quads. The police spotted several of the all-terrain vehicles leaving the area by running through the grass at the public housing apartments at 8:51 p.m.

At 9:40 p.m. a man at Snowden Terrace reported quads on the street. When police arrived, the quads were gone. Thirteen minutes later, a man on Lewis Street reported quads. Police heard the vehicles and spotted one of them, but were unable to identify the driver.

“If anybody sees anybody on quads, photograph them and positively identify them and call the police immediately,” Mrosko said.

On Thursday, shortly before noon, a caller reported seeing a male pushing a quad through the alley behind Broad Street. The caller said it was the same person that had been driving the quad on Green Street and that she had a photo of the male driving the quad.

Police arrived and confiscated the red ATV. Charges are pending against the 17-year-old juvenile who was found pushing the quad and who the witness said had been driving it earlier.

Mrosko said the pending arrest does not necessarily mean the problem with quads has been resolved.

“There’s a small group of people running around with quads. We did confiscate one,” Mrosko said.

A Broad Street resident contacted police Thursday afternoon to say that she had spotted damage to her fence that morning that she believed was related to a loud noise she had heard the night before. The caller said she had heard a quad on Green Street, then a loud bang near her residence Wednesday.
