Suspect in California shooting gives up

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

A 22-year-old Allegheny County man accused of shooting an Elizabeth man during a dispute at a bar in California early Saturday has turned himself in to police. Vikram Yamba of Turtle Creek was charged Monday before Magisterial District Judge Jay Dutton in Claysville with criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and several firearms violations, California police said.

Yamba, a freshman at California University of Pennsylvania, turned himself in to police in Churchill, Allegheny County, Sunday night after police were searching for him since the shooting.

According to California police Chief Rick Encapera, the victim in the shooting, Marc Morris, 22, a junior at California University, was treated for a gunshot wound to his leg at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Encapera said the shooting occurred at McMonagle’s Bar on Union Street at 2 a.m. when Yamba and Morris started to fight.

During the altercation, Encapera said Yamba pulled a handgun from his pants and shot Morris in the leg. Then, as Yamba left the scene, he allegedly pointed the handgun at a security guard at the door, police said.

Dr. Sean Madden, the university’s interim provost said, “Pending further investigation, the university will refrain from discussing specific details.”

However, the campus briefly was on a heightened security alert following the shooting and students were advised of the incident on the university’s Web site.

On Monday, the Web site indicated that Yamba, who does not live on campus, had been caught and that the security threat was over.

Yamba was placed in the Washington County Jail on $25,000 straight cash bond. Jail officials said that Yamba was released from the prison Monday after posting bond.

University officials confirmed that Yamba is a son of Mohamed Yamba, associate professor of history and political science at Cal U.

Telephone calls to Mohamed Yamba’s office were not answered.
