Local woman honored for volunteer efforts
Angela Hlatky of Brownsville is the type of student any school would be proud to have. And that’s certainly true of the West Virginia Career Institute in Mount Braddock where Hlatky is enrolled. Not only an outstanding student, Hlatky is a tireless volunteer for numerous charities. A member of Phi Beta Lambda, she participates in all of the chapter’s charity drives, helping the Central Blood Bank drives, Toys for Tots, Noah’s Ark animal shelter, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
“Angela is very caring individual. She is a true asset to our institution and demonstrates the qualities that we strive to teach here at the West Virginia Career Institute,’ said Maria T. Lovat, the school’s senior admissions representative.
For her volunteering efforts, Hlatky has been selected to receive a Fayette County Community Service All-Star Award. She is among 10 local students being honored for putting forth an extra effort to make a difference in their communities. The students come from Fayette County’s seven high schools as well as the West Virginia Career Institute, the Laurel Business Institute and Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
The students were nominated on the basis of their grade-point average and community service. The students will receive a $500 check to help them with their college costs.
The students will be honored at a breakfast at 30 East Main restaurant on Thursday, May 17. Alyssa Trynock of Big Brothers/Big Sisters will be the master of ceremonies. Uniontown banker Ben Wright will be the guest speaker.
Sponsors for the program include the Herald-Standard, Jes Hutson, Dave and Linda Meredith, Shelly and Paul Songer, Community Foundation of Fayette County, National City Bank Foundation, Cherokee Fur and Recycling, Jimmy Gismondi, John Gismondi and Associates, National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 520, Russ Blaho, Harry Brownfield, Dan Evans, John Evans, Elouise Eberly, First National Bank, Hartsek Catering, Leda Gismondi, Bill Hutson, Kisiel and Rudnik, PC, Laurel Business Institute, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus Alumni Society.

Hlatky, the daughter of Paul and Rose Lynn Hlatky, said she’s always been a strong believer in helping others.
“Just as a person, I feel much better if I give rather than if I receive. All I would love in exchange for helping an organization is if they would pay forward and help others,’ said Hlatky.
“Community service gives me the chance to make a difference. There are so many people that need help and have no where else to turn to,’ she added. “Community service is a positive way of making the community better for everyone. ‘
