Birthday wishes

Billy Umble of Smithfield celebrates his birthday today. He is the husband of Joyce Umble and the father of Hannah Umble.

Belinda Hoone of Whitehouse will celebrate her birthday on Saturday. She is the wife of Chuck Hoone. The former Belinda McLaughlin, she is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. George McLaughlin of Whitehouse.

Pinewood Derby

The Fairchance Pack 609 held its annual Pinewood Derby on April 29 at the Fairchance Fire Hall.

Winners include the following:

Cub Scout Division: Todd Eicher, first place; Hunter Barber, second place; Josh Dewitt, third place; Sam Hlatky, best of show.

The Pack allowed the outgoing Boy Scouts to hold a race with the adults.

The Boy Scout winners were: Brett McCourt, first place; Joey Davis, second place; Nick Thomas, third place; Brett McCourt, best of show.

Winners in the adult race were: Rob Dewitt, first place; Wes Gower, second place; Paul Thomas third place, and Steve Varto, fourth place.

Thanks are extended to the Fairchance Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary for the donation of trophies and for the help. Elaine Kessler, pack commissioner, picked the best of show winners.

Mt. Moriah kindergarten

Children who are registered or planning to register at the Mt. Moriah Christian School in Smithfield in the fall attended a kindergarten roundup on Tuesday. The roundup included screenings for academic readiness, health, vision, speech and hearing.

Memorial Day parade

The annual Smithfield Memorial Day parade will be held on May 28. Line up for the parade is at 1 p.m. on Liberty Street. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade is asked to contact Mayor Charles Cieszynski Jr., or call the borough secretary, Jamie Hoone at 724-569-9601.

The parade begins at 2 p.m. The Memorial Day program will follow immediately after the parade at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Preschool registration

The Mount Moriah Christian School is accepting enrollment for preschool classes for the 2007-2008 school year. Classes are available for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds. Call Mina Brown at 724-725-4890 for more information, or to register.

Council meeting

The Smithfield Borough Council meeting was held Tuesday at the borough building on Water Street, Smithfield. The change in the date is due to Election Day on May 15.

Crime Watch meeting

The Smithfield Crime Watch meeting will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the library at the borough building on Water Street. Residents are welcomed to attend.

Congratulations

The Whitehouse Free Methodist Church Youth Group Bible Quiz Team for grades 6-12 completed their final Bible Quiz Match for the year on April 28 at the Monacrest Free Methodist Church in Monaca. The team brought home trophies for second and third places. The Rookies and the Vets Quiz Teams travel monthly throughout the conference district for the regional matches. The team has consistently placed this season, bringing home trophies each month.

Get well wishes

Get well wishes are sent to John Brady of Whitehouse, who is hospitalized.

Bernice Garlick of Midland Street, Smithfield, is also ill. She is the wife of Kenneth Garlick. Their son, Richard Garlick of Illinois was home recently to visit her.
