Caution urged
With proms, graduations and end-of-the-school-year parties upcoming, the state Department of Tranpsortation is urging high school students to use extreme caution each time they get in a vehicle with friends.
“The importance of buckling up, traveling at speeds safe for conditions, and never drinking and driving cannot be stressed enough with young, inexperienced drivers,” said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler.
“The last few weeks of high school are an exciting time where students are looking forward to the summer,” said Biehler. “We encourage students to celebrate safely and avoid dangerous behaviors behind the wheel.”
Teen drinking and driving can have devastating consequences. Drivers between the ages of 16 and18 were involved in nearly 1,000 alcohol-related crashes from 2004 to 2005. Thirty-eight teens were killed in those crashes, including 24 drivers who had been drinking and 14 of their passengers.
In addition to not drinking and driving, PennDOT reminds teens to buckle up no matter where they are seated. Nearly 100 teens were killed between 2004 and 2005 as a result of not wearing seat belts. Nineteen teenagers who died were riding in the second or third row of the vehicle.
Aggressive driving, especially speeding, is another major contributing factor in crashes involving teen drivers. Speeding contributed to the deaths of 122 teens from 2004 to 2005. Other aggressive driving behaviors include running red lights or stop signs, unsafe lane changes and tailgating, PennDOT said.
