Work on Carmichaels building to begin Tuesday

By Steve Ferris 1 min read

The contractor for Carmichaels’ new borough building plans to deliver lumber to the construction site on Tuesday and begin work soon. Borough council was informed Tuesday that the contractor, Wrangler Enterprises of Eighty Four, plans to deliver the lumber for the $128,400 building to the borough-owned lot on West George Street.

Mary Lewis, borough secretary, said the building should be completed in 90 days, barring any weather delays. She said the borough already has obtained a building permit.

All but an estimated $15,000 of the $122,000 that council has set aside for the building is state grant money.

Lewis said a friend of hers who wishes to remain anonymous recently pledged a $10,000 donation for the project.

“It’s for the whole community,” Lewis said, about the borough building.

The new one-story sided building will be about 900 square feet and will be located along the town square. It will have a borough office, meeting room and police station.

In April, council awarded the construction contract to Wrangler, which submitted the lowest of four bids.

The other bids ranged from $138,900 to $174,300.

Currently, council rents a small office on South Market Street that has served as the borough office and police station for at least the last 20 years.
