Four candidates look to fill West Brownsville council

By Jenny Susa 2 min read

There are four candidates vying for three available seats on West Brownsville Borough Council, including three incumbents and a former councilman. Incumbents George Lacey, Dan Kendall and Gary Bennett are being challenged by John Petro. Petro served on council until 2004, when he lost his re-election bid.

“Some people in town would like to see me back on council, so I decided to run again,” said Petro.

He said he has no special plans if he does get re-elected, except to do the best he can with the small community’s limited budget.

“I hoped to bring in funds for revitalizing the area’s playgrounds,” said Petro. “I was working on that before and didn’t get to pursue that further.”

Petro said he will do the best he can to serve the borough, but he “won’t promise anything that can’t be done.”

Lacey said that he would also like to improve the community’s playgrounds. As the borough’s street commissioner, he said he has the playground downtown ready to open for the year.

“I would like to try to bring in some businesses and get some revenue coming in,” said Lacey.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to hire some more help for the street department and the police department.”

Kendall had the same thoughts as Petro as far as the borough’s limited budget, which he said makes it difficult to get things done.

“Hopefully with sewerage becoming available in the near future, we will see some housing development and possible commercial development,” said Kendall, who said that he decided to run for re-election primarily because planning for the sewerage project is in the final stages and construction will begin soon.

“I’d like to be here to see that through,” said Kendall.

Bennett declined to comment.
