SPRINGFIELD TWP. – Rescue crews used ropes and a flat-board stretcher to save a man who fell off a 20-foot cliff outside Mill Run. According to Springfield firefighters, the unidentified man fell while walking along train tracks off of Stewarton Road around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters said emergency crews used the help of several people in kayaks on the Youghiogheny River to move the injured man farther down stream to an area where crews could hoist him from the riverside.

Officials said the man suffered moderate injuries and was being flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.

Crews worked for more than an hour to save the man.

Firefighters from Springfield Township, Normalville and Ohiopyle, along with emergency personnel from Fayette EMS responded to the remote scene.
