Burns, Maggi, Irey will get chance to repeat as Washington commissioners
The three incumbent Washington County Commissioners will get a chance to retain their seats in the fall general election. Democratic incumbents Bracken Burns and Larry Maggi, along with Republican incumbent Diana Irey got their party’s nominations, along with Steven G. Fischer on the Republican ticket. Michael J. Neville came in third on the Republican ballot.
Burns and Maggi outdistanced Harlan Shober and Joe Manning, who ran as a team, as well as Randy J. Barli and Harry Sabatasse.
With 116 out 185 precincts reporting or 60 percent of the unofficial totals on the Democratic side show: Maggi, 7,833; Burns, 7,377; Manning 5,663; Shober, 5,147; Barli, 1,393; and Sabatasse, 1,329. On the Republican ballot Irey had 5,437 votes to Fischer’s 3,656 and Neville’s 3,541.
In another hotly contested race four candidates sought the Democratic nod for Washington County Register of Wills.
Mary Jo Poknis, who is second in command in the office to current Register Katherine Flynn Reda, competed against Charles E. Kurowski, John B. Rotheram and Diane Tatano.
Lynette Leasure ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.
With 116 out 185 precincts reporting unofficial totals show: Poknis, 6,371; Tatano, 3,562; Kurowski, 3,308; and Rotheram, 2,281. Leasure had 5,555 votes on the Republican ballot.
Poknis and Leasure will compete in the fall to replace Reda who did not seek another term.
In the race for the Democratic nomination for Washington County Prothonotary, incumbent Phyllis Ranko Matheny outdistanced challengers Judith L. Fisher and John Trapuzzano. There were no Republican candidates for the post.
With 116 out 185 precincts reporting unofficial totals show: Matheny, 5,964; Fisher, 5,732; and Trapuzzano, 3,563.
Incumbent District Attorney John C. Pettit ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination, however, will face Republican Steven M. Toprani, who ran unopposed for his party’s nomination.
Unofficial results show Pettit received 10,592 votes, while Toprani got 5,726 votes to land the Republican nomination.
Other incumbent Democrats facing no competition in the primary and no Republican candidates running were: Treasurer Francis L. King, 14,190 votes; Clerk of Courts Barbara Gibbs, 13,415; and Coroner S. Timothy Warco, 13,981.
