Charles A. (Shaky) Yurchick, 82, of Ellsworth died unexpectedly Monday, May 14, 2007 in his home.
He was born July… Charles A. (Shaky) Yurchick, 82, of Ellsworth died unexpectedly Monday, May 14, 2007 in his home.
He was born July 25, 1924, in Scalplevel, Pa., a son of the late Wasil and Mary Kovalchick Yurchick.
Mr. Yurchick was a veteran of World War II serving as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator and was a part of the Atlantic Coastal Defense Group.
He had been employed by Bethlehem Mines Corp. as an underground coal miner and surveyor for over 32 years at Mine #51 in Ellsworth before retiring in 1983.
Mr. Yurchick was a gunsmith and operated Shaky’s Gunsmithing for many years. Also an avid model plane enthusiast, he set a tethered model plane world speed record reaching 168 mph in 1952. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Bentleyville Eagles, National Rifle Association, and was a life member of the Centerville Sportsmen’s Club. Along with nine other veterans in the U.S., Winchester Firearms donated $100,000 in Mr. Yurchicks name to the World War II War Memorial in Washington D.C.
He had been a member of the Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church in Charleroi for over 70 years.
Surviving is one son, Charles W. Yurchick and wife, Marilyn of Cokeburg, one daughter, Susan A. Furlage and husband James, of Bentleyville, one sister, Helen Lewis of Chardon, OH., one brother, Tom Yurchick of Ellsworth, two grandchildren, Renee’ Kellerman, Eric Scicchitano, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents are his wife, Violet Gacy Yurchick, who died April 4, 1990, two sisters, Mary Verosko, who died January 9, 1988, Pauline Yurkovich who died, July 27, 2006, two brothers, Andrew Yurchick, who died November 22, 2006 and John “Gus” Yurchick, who died November 27, 2006.
Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. today in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville where funeral services will be held at Noon on Thursday, May 17, 2007 with the Rev. James Ragan officiating.
Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Twp.
