UASB nominations secured
Six candidates who received their party’s nomination in Tuesday’s primary election will battle for five available seats on the Uniontown Area School Board in November, according to unofficial election results. With 91 percent of the votes counted county wide, incumbent Kenneth G. Meadows secured a nomination on both the Democratic and Republican tickets, receiving 1,096 and 540 votes, respectively.
Challengers Paul H. Bortz Sr., Alan George and Philip Holt also secured both the Democratic and Republican nominations.
Bortz received 875 Democratic votes and 498 Republican votes, George received 774 Democratic votes and 482 Republican votes and Holt received 817 Democratic votes and 641 Republican votes.
Meadows, Bortz, George and Holt won Democratic and Republican nominations, while Vincent Winfrey and Timothy Sandstrom also remain in the running. Winfrey secured a Democratic nomination, receiving 1,070 votes, while Sandstrom secured a Republican nomination, receiving 431 votes.
Three incumbent candidates, all of whom supported spending $34.8 million to renovate the high school, were ousted.
The controversial project has caused a rift between current school directors and members of a citizens advisory group who are against spending the entire amount of money on the high school.
All of the candidates who received a nomination Tuesday – Meadows, Bortz, George, Holt, Winfrey and Sandstrom – said they were against spending the entire amount of money on the high school alone.
Current President Susan S. Clay, Tammy J. Boyle and Charles C. Castor failed to gain a nomination on either ballot.
On the Democratic ticket, with 91 percent of the votes counted, Clay received 618 votes while Boyle received 501 and Castor received 373.
On the Republican ticket, Clay received 239 votes while Boyle received 197 and Castor received 101.
Challengers Janet Warchol Guthrie and Grace Miller also failed to gain a nomination on either ballot.
Guthrie received 611 Democratic votes and 242 Republican votes, while Miller received 348 and 121, respectively.
