Election bureau confirms school board results
CALIFORNIA – The unofficial Washington County Election Bureau results for the primary election show the same five candidates winning the Democratic and Republican party nominations Tuesday in the California Area School Board races. Candidates in California run by region. There is one seat open in Region 1, which covers most of California Borough. Norm Hasbrouck, who was appointed to the school board last year when a board member moved out of the district, is the apparent winner of both party nominations over challenger Gerald “Galvie” Gardner.
The unofficial results show Hasbrouck with 302 votes for the Democratic Party nomination to Gardner’s 236 votes and with 66 votes for the Republican Party nomination to Gardner’s 35 votes.
There are two seats open in Region 2, covering part of California Borough, part of West Brownsville, and West Pike Run Township. The incumbents, Thomas Russell and John Bayer, easily won both the Democratic and Republican Party nominations over challenger Walter Moluski III.
Bayer was the top vote getter in the Democratic Party race with 299 votes to Russell’s 294. Moluski placed third with 209 votes. Russell and Bayer each received 70 votes on the Republican ballot to Moluski’s 40 votes.
Two seats are open in Region 3, covering Coal Center, Long Branch, Elco, Roscoe and Allenport.
The top candidate in both the Democratic and Republican races was Diane Zielensky, a political newcomer, but a long-time district employee who had retired a year ago. Zielensky received 304 votes to capture the top spot on the Democratic Party nominations and 45 votes to lead the Republican Party nominations. Incumbent George Safin placed second in each of the party races, with 190 votes on the Democratic ticket and 26 to capture the second seat on the Republican ballot in November.
Placing third in both races was incumbent Donna Tyrpin, who received 170 votes in the Democratic Party primary race and 24 votes in the Republican Party race.
All results are unofficial and may not include absentee ballots.
