Grant announced U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Johnstown, announced Tuesday that California University of Pennsylvania received an Upward Bound grant through the Department of Education with an initial year award of $618,540.
Murtha is the chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
The Upward Bound program provides participants with the skills and motivation necessary for success beyond secondary school. The program serves high school students from low-income families and/or high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
The grant will enable Cal U to annually provide 130 economically disadvantaged students in Fayette and Greene counties with the resources they need to be successful in higher education.
The university expects to receive more than $2.4 million during the four-year period of this award.
