The places along the way
I ran into my friend Steve Wood…. I ran into my friend Steve Wood from Hagerstown, Md., while I was visiting Fort Frederick Market Days and we were talking about how nearly all of our vacations end up having an historic theme. I asked if he had any favorite spots that weren’t historic sites. The first place that came to his mind was Edisto Beach State Park in South Carolina.
“My wife and I found it by accident. We had been in Savannah. My wife and I often have unplanned vacations. We’ll go some place, then on the way home, take back roads,” Steve said. Edisto Beach State Park is about 105 miles from Savannah and on an island, 28 miles after you turn off of Highway 17, not exactly on a direct line home to Hagerstown.
“It’s where the people who sell shells in Florida get their shells,” Steve said. “I found a pre-Columbian stone fishing weight, a mammoth tooth and a fossilized stingray tail. The wave action brings stuff in from all down the coast. They’ve found Spanish doubloons and pieces of eight. It’s a wild little place.”
Steve said the park interpretive center already has so many artifacts that anything found on the beach can be kept by the finder.
“It’s not real easy to get to, but it’s worth the trip,” Steve said.
The park offers both camping and cabin rental.
