Jeff-Morgan passes $11 million budget with no tax increase

The Jefferson-Morgan School Board passed an $11 million budget for the 2007-08 school year without increasing taxes Monday. At the regular monthly meeting, the board held the real estate tax rate steady at 23 mills, meaning district property owners will pay $230.90 for every $10,000 in assessed property value.

So, a district property owner with a $50,000 home will pay $1,154.50 in real estate taxes this coming school year.

School district Business Manager Jennifer Foringer said the $11,991,783 balanced budget, which represents a zero-tax increase, is larger than last year’s $11.5 million budget.

It includes no major projects or district spending, but depends on a basic subsidy of $200,000 from the state, if Gov. Ed Rendell’s budget is approved, and $80,000 more than last year in real estate taxes.

Foringer said the district’s health insurance costs have decreased over last year’s costs, though the budget reflects an increase in salaries and savings from three teacher retirements.
