Man who stole bleachers captured

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

A Smithfield man wanted on charges he stole aluminum bleachers from a ball field in North Union Township to sell as scrap metal has been captured. Trooper James Pierce said a warrant for the arrest of Damien Seward, 29, was served Friday in Connellsville.

He was charged before Magisterial District Judge Wendy Dennis with theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy and was placed in the Fayette County Prison on $10,000 bond, Pierce said.

Seward joins Brady J. Piper, 29, of Uniontown, who was charged earlier this month with theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy for his role in the bleacher theft and Deborah Lynn Ashby, 37, of Uniontown, who was charged with criminal conspiracy in the theft, police said.

Pierce said Seward, Piper and Ashby stole parts of the bleachers at Eberly Park in the R.W. Clark Youth Baseball League in North Union Township June 7.

Pierce said the trio arrived at the park just after midnight June 7 and dismantled sections of the bleachers and loaded them into Ashby’s minivan.

Later that day, Pierce said the group took the metal to a scrap yard in Brownsville and sold the aluminum.

However, an employee at the scrap yard knew of the theft at the park, copied Ashby’s license plate number, and then notified police, Pierce said.
