REDSTONE TWP. – Four people were taken to area hospitals following a three-vehicle accident on Route 40 just east of Davidson Siding Road Tuesday evening.

According to Fayette County 911, the accident occurred at 6:53 p.m. State trooper Matt Uram said a westbound Ford Taurus first collided with an eastbound sport utility vehicle, then collided head-on with a Honda Civic. Don Pysola of Venetia, who was driving home from a business trip to Hagerstown, Md., said he was traveling behind the Taurus and witnessed the accident.

He praised the local emergency responders.

“The emergency crews were here in three or four minutes. Everyone seems to be very organized and doing a good job,” Pysola said.

The driver of the Taurus and the two individuals in the Honda had to be cut from their vehicles, both of which sustained obvious front-end damage. According to Allison 1 Assistant Fire Chief Jack Churby, both people in the Honda appeared to be in their mid-20’s.

Karol said the driver of the Honda was flown from the scene to a Pittsburgh hospital by STAT MedEvac, while the female passenger was taken by ambulance to Uniontown Hospital. The other two drivers, also male, were also taken by ambulance to Uniontown Hospital, Karol said. He said the female passenger in the sport utility vehicle refused treatment, but rode along in the ambulance to the hospital with the driver.

Two emergency medical helicopters landed at the scene, but Uram said emergency crews decided to fly only one of the patients.

Brownsville Ambulance Service Inc., Hiller Ambulance and Fayette EMS responded to the call in addition to the Allison 1, Allison 2, Republic and Grindstone fire departments. Route 40 was closed to traffic in the area of the accident until the scene was cleared at 8:32 p.m.
