Yarbrough earns Ph.D. The Rev. Dr. Gary P. Yarbrough, a local resident, recently received his Ph.D. in Management Ministries from the Graduate Theological Foundation (GTF) in South Bend, Ind.
Yarbrough also received the Howard Thurmond Prize for Parish Ministries.
GTF is an international university that is associated with Oxford University and Rome. Yarbrough completed his doctorate degree while working at Sensus Metering Systems Inc. as an electronics and service parts manager. He also serves as pastor of Bethel Community Outreach Ministries Inc.
Yarbrough received the Howard Thurmond Prize during the commencement ceremony May 4. He received the prize for creating a computer program called the Computerized Pastoral Reporting System (CPR System) designed to help pastors of the African Methodist Episcopal Church make their annual reports via the Internet.
Kopacko graduates
Michael Kopacko of Uniontown recently graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Rehabilitation Science.
Kopacko, son of Cynthia Kopacko of Uniontown and John W. Kopacko of Republic, is a 2003 graduate of Laurel Highlands High School.
He was on of approximately 6,000 students who received undergraduate and gradaute degrees from the University of Pittsburgh at the April 29 commencement ceremony held at the Peterson Event Center in Pittsburgh.
Kopacko has been accepted in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Pittsburgh and will begin his studies in June.
Capitoni gets degree
Gina Capitoni of Carmichaels graduated from Lycoming College during the college’s 159th commencement ceremony May 6. Capitoni graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
Smith graduates
Stacy Smith of Dunbar graduated from Lipscomb University with a Bachelor of Science degree in management and marketing May 5.
Diplomas delivered
Allegheny College announced five area students graduated May 13.
The students are as follows:
– Martin Bobak, son of Wladyslaw Bobak of Uniontown, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
– Daniel S. Chorba II, son of Daniel and Anna Chorba of McClellandtown, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
– Scarlett E. Graham, daughter of Walter and Julie Graham of Farmington, received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry, graduating cum laude.
– Amy E. Hughes, daughter of Mark and Karen Hughes of Masontown, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
– Megan L. Myers, daughter of Susan Myers of Fairchance, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication arts.
Solomon earns degree
Ashley Solomon of Merrittstown recently graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree. It was the college’s 157th commencement ceremony.
Mendola graduates
Christine Kovach Mendola of Monongahela graduated with honors from Westmoreland County Community College May 10 with an Associate’s Degree in dental hygiene.
Mendola received the Western Pennsylvania Hygienist Assistant Outstanding Dental Award in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and clinical performance, as well as professional demeanor.
Scholarship announced
Rebecca Baily, a sophomore Spanish major at Westminster College, received the Frank L. and Esther Van Dyke McLure Music Scholarship at the annual Spring Honors Convocation April 28. Baily is a graduate of Waynesburg Central High School.
Taylor honored
Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, recently honored Jacqueline Taylor of Uniontown for academic success at the 15th annual All Honors Day April 21.
Taylor, a theology major, received the Victor B. Nieporte, S.J. Theology Award. Established by the Jane E. and Thomas R. Armstrong Foundation, the award is presented to graduating seniors completing the theology major with distinction. Taylor is the daughter of Drs. Brian and Judith Taylor.
Voithofer selected
Zach Voithofer of Smithfield was recently selected by the faculty of the Petroleum Engineering Department at Marietta College in Ohio to receive the Harry H. Beren Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
The scholarship is awarded in recognition of students’ strong academic effort in petroleum engineering as well as their involvement in the Society of Petroleum Engineers and other activities.
Voithofer is one of 11 students at Marietta College to receive the award. He is majoring in petroleum engineering and is the son of Michelle and Fred Voithofer of Smithfield.
Mowen earns honor
The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown recently announced Christina Mowen made the dean’s list for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Mowen, a mathematics education major, earned a 4.0 grade point average for both the fall and spring terms. The dean’s list recognizes full-time students who have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
She is the daughter of Theodore and Patricia Mowen and was the 2006 valedictorian at Uniontown Area High School.
Blake accepted
Brandon M. Blake of Uniontown has been accepted to the engineering program at West Virginia University. He will start his studies in the fall of 2007.
Blake, son of Jeannie Blake and Barton Blake of Uniontown, participated in the dual enrollment program at Penn State University while completing his senior year at Laurel Highlands High School.
