School bus, car collide
A Southmoreland Area School District bus and a passenger vehicle collided head-on Friday morning on Broadford Road, Upper Tyrone Township. According to Southmoreland School District Superintendent Dr. John K. Halfhill, the elementary school bus, owned by Grooms Transit of East Huntingdon Township, was carrying 14 elementary school students at the time of the crash.
Halfhill said none of the students or the bus driver was injured in the 8:30 a.m. accident. A Southmoreland School District nurse was called to the scene and checked out the students who were not transferred to local hospitals for additional care.
Halfhill said parents of the students were also notified of the accident.
Trooper Jerry Cooley of the state police at Belle Vernon said the accident occurred when a car driven west on Broadford Road by Lori Carnes of Connellsville and the school bus driven east by Mary Taxacher of Tarrs collided. Cooley noted both vehicles sustained disabling damage and required towing from the scene.
A Fayette County Emergency 911 supervisor said Carnes was flown by emergency helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.
In addition to police, the Everson Volunteer Fire Company and Mutual Aid Ambulance Service also assisted at the scene.
