Garrett College in Maryland has announced they are accepting applications for the next series of classes geared to assist individuals in obtaining a commercial driving license.

The weekday class begins June 18 and the weekend class begins June 2. The training is all-inclusive offering classroom, yard skills and over-the-road training.

The program consists of 320 hours of training over a 15-week period for weekday students and a 20-week time frame for those choosing the weekend option. Training will qualify students for entry-level positions as a driver in over-the-road or local driving vehicles.

Government grants, tuition reimbursement and student locals may be available to qualifying individuals.

Education course offered

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, will hold a credit and non-credit course titles “Students with Autism in Inclusive Settings” from 6 to 9p.m. May 30 and June 6, 13, and 20 on campus.

While the focus of the course is for general educators, others who work in the fields of counseling/therapy will also benefit from taking the course.

An autism expert approved by the Penn State College of Education will lead the class and presentations by Dr. Pamela S. Wolfe, Penn State associate professor of special education, will also be viewed.

The course is offered for two credits or may be taken for non-credit at a reduced fee. A total of 12 classroom hours is required.

Enrollment ongoing

A.G. Montessori School, located at 199 Edison St. in Uniontown, is currently enrolling preschool and elementary students for the 2007-2008 school year.

The school also offers a three-week summer camp program for current and prospective students. During the camp, beginning June 4, students can enjoy the unique Montessori learning experience as well as arts and crafts, science activities and plenty of outdoor time.

Applications sought

Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County is taking applications for the 2007-2008 school year. Head Start is a program for pregnant women and children 5 and under and provides a complete educational program and other related comprehensive services. Families are supported in securing medical, dental and social services with a concentrated effort to provide services to children with disabilities.

The program also collaborates with a local day care centers at no additional cost to current childcare. For an application, call the Head Start office at 724-430-4818 or toll free at 1-800-876-2138.

Orientation scheduled

Laurel Highlands Middle School will hold an orientation for any elementary students transitioning to the sixth grade at 7 p.m. May 30 in the middle school auditorium.

District offering meals

The Frazier School District will operate its summer food service program from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from June 11 to Aug. 17 in the high school cafeteria except for July 4 when it will be closed.

All children are eligible to receive free lunch regardless of income. The cost for adults is $1.50 for breakfast and $2.25 for lunch while all meals must be consumed in the cafeteria.
