Three Civil War veterans buried at the Phillipsburg Cemetery in California Borough are the focus of a presentation sponsored by the California Area Historical Society on Sunday, June 10.
Descendants of the veterans and a member of the Chartiers Valley Guards, part of the North-South Skirmish Association, are the program presenters.
Dressed in Civil War attire, the presenters will share the knowledge gained from military records of these veterans from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration and genealogical research.
The Civil War veterans featured in the program are Daniel Sims, Independent Battery E, Knapps Battery; John Henry Veatch, 1st West Virginia Artillery; and William Henry Harrison White, Co. D, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry.
The programs begin at 2 p.m. at the California Methodist Church, Third & Liberty streets, California.
Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend.
Hunter/trapper training
The South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club will hold hunter/trapper training classes from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 22, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 23, at the clubhouse.
According to organizers, both classes must be completed to receive hunter safety certification.
All first-time hunters who have reached their 12th birthday by July 1, 2008, are eligible to participate. Also, previously licensed hunters who wish to purchase a hunting license outside of Pennsylvania are welcome.

Walnut Hill Road work
The state Department of Transportation District 12 in Uniontown said contractors will be removing and replacing the bituminous pavement placed last October on Walnut Hill Road at the Route 40 (Uniontown Bypass) intersection beginning Tuesday.
PennDOT quality-control testing revealed that the placed asphalt material did not meet the compaction density required by the contract. The material will be removed and replaced at the contractor’s expense. The work is expected to be completed by Thursday. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible during the removal and resurfacing operations.
PennDOT update
Chris Sleighter, Fayette County maintenance manager with the state Department of Transportation, has announced the following tentative work plan for the week beginning Monday.
– Deck repairs will begin to the bridge on Palmer Road.
– Signs will be updated, downed signs will be replaced and work orders will be addressed on various state routes throughout the county.
– Erosion control for bridges will occur on various routes throughout the county.
– Widening and base repairs will take place on Navaho Hollow Road, Hamer Road and Redstone Church Road in the Washington Township area.
– Drainage work is scheduled on state Route 381 in the Farmington area and on state Route 21 in the Masontown area.
– Bridge flushing operations will occur on various routes in the Connellsville and Cloverleaf areas.
– Oil and chip activities are scheduled for four rural routes in the High House area.
