Suspicious package investigated
Uniontown police were alerted to a suspicious package at the PNC Bank automated-teller machine on Church Street in the city Saturday. Uniontown police Detective Jason A. Cox said the Allegheny County Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene.
Detective Donald M. Gmitter said the package, which was a medium-sized, black Samsonite suitcase, was found behind the garbage can. Police were called at 9:11 a.m., according to a Fayette County 911 spokesperson. Gmitter said the bomb squad arrived around 11:30 a.m. and was on the scene until around 1 p.m.
Bomb technicians “determined the package was not a threat and said the suitcase was subsequently destroyed,” Gmitter said.
He said the incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about who may have left the suitcase can call Gmitter at the Uniontown police station at 724-430-2929, ext. 310.
