Letter carriers, students praised for food drive

2 min read

The Food Bank at Fayette County Community Action Agency (FCCAA) said it is appreciative of the efforts of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the students of LaFayette School in Uniontown Area School District during the 15th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. Letter carriers at the post offices in Brownsville, Carmichaels, Connellsville, Dunbar, Fairchance, Hopwood, Masontown, Point Marion and Uniontown collected more than 29,000 pounds of food during a one-day food drive on May 12. Additionally, the students of LaFayette School brought in more than 300 pounds of non-perishable food items that will help restock the local food bank.

“We would like to thank our patrons, students and letter carriers, all of whom contributed to this worthy cause,” said Karen Kapel, food drive chairwoman with Letter Carriers Branch 520.

Jamie Brink, FCCAA food bank project manager, added, “This year drive was especially important because a number of families we provide assistance to increased by 915 households over the previous year.”

Letter carriers delivered the donated items to the Community Action Food Bank for distribution to those needed through the food banks network of food pantries and soup kitchens. Last year’s drive resulted in 70,493, 150 pounds of food collected nationally. This year, local letter carriers collected 29,421 pounds of food during this one-day event.
