Masontown man charged in fatal accident

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

A Masontown man has been charged with homicide by vehicle after state police crash reconstruction experts determined he was driving over the speed limit in a fatal crash last month. Jeffrey David of 411 N. Main St. was charged before Magisterial District Judge Randy Abraham last week with homicide by vehicle and five charges related to traffic violations.

The charges stem from his role in the crash that killed Vaone Benucci, also of Masontown, on River Road April 19, Masontown Police Chief Richard Barron said.

Barron said Wednesday that investigators determined David was traveling 42 mph at the time of the head-on collision, 17 mph faster than the posted speed limit.

According to Barron, the crash occurred at 1:56 p.m. when David’s car crossed the centerline while traveling eastbound on River Road near the intersection with First Street and struck Benucci’s car.

Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the crash, Barron said. Barron said Benucci was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

He said David was on his way home after working a night shift at a restaurant in Waynesburg when the collision occurred.

Fayette County Deputy Coroner Marisa Springer said Benucci of 302 N. First St. was pronounced dead at the Uniontown Hospital following the crash.

Fayette County Coroner Dr. Philip Reilly said Benucci died as a result of head injuries.

Barron said David suffered injuries to his chest and legs and was taken by ambulance to Uniontown Hospital.

David was released on $50,000 unsecured bond.

A preliminary hearing will be held next month before Abraham.
