Albert Gallatin designates alternate education provider
Adelphoi Village Academy was designated the alternative education provider for Albert Gallatin Area School District at Wednesday’s school board meeting. School board member unanimously agreed to appoint Adelphoi as the district’s official approved private provider of alternative education services.
Adelphoi will be based out of the existing A.L. Wilson Elementary School and will provide alternative education for disruptive youth and juveniles in the court system.
The district is in the process of building a new A.L. Wilson Elementary School in Fairchance and will lease the old building to Adelphoi.
The school board heard comments from district resident Daryl Smith, who said he was concerned about the type of children that would attend Adelphoi and the type of personnel that are employed there, noting recent problems.
Smith, who is president of Fayette County Crime Stoppers, said the surrounding community needs to be aware of the exact services Adelphoi will provide, likening it to a juvenile detention center.
Smith also asked if Adelphoi will have security there on a daily basis.
Solicitor Lee Price said there will be security and that Adelphoi will provide day treatments for the juveniles enrolled there.
School board members did not discuss Smith’s comments or further discuss their decision to appoint Adelphoi as the alternative education provider.
Superintendent Walter Vicinelly said the decision was cost effective for the district.
In unrelated business, the school board approved a revised version of the 2008-2009 school calendar. August 25 will be the first day of school and June 3 is scheduled as graduation and the last day of school.
